And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead + Spoilers. Boilershop, Newcastle. 03.02.19.

Spoilers are a London based garage punk band whose first release, a 3 song cassette appropriately titled 3 Songs came out in 2015.  2015 also saw the release of a live album, again on cassette, before album Anti Vibe was released on vinyl in 2016. Limited 7” single Nothing appeared in 2017, also on cassette. This month saw the release of new single Facts Are Changing. Opening with Try Try Try, a thunderous, melodic noise underpinned by a relentless drum beat, rumbling bass and twin guitars it’s mere seconds before you’re hooked in. Energy, that’s what Spoilers have, tons of it. Craig Sharp’s vocals are hammered at you while Chris Smith pummels his bass. All this topped off with driving guitar licks. As a band they own the stage, losing themselves (as all great bands do) in the songs they deliver. No Pressure is relentless, perfect punk rock n roll while more recent songs Nothing and Facts Are Changing take the band in more commercially appealing direction without losing sight of where they’ve come from. With no loss of drive, speed, attitude or aggression these are songs to play in the build up to a really good night out. A real shame Spoilers only get 30 minutes tonight.

It’s 20 years since …Trail Of Dead’s album ‘Madonna’ was released and this current tour is celebrating that fact. Walking on to the dark chanting of “You will know them by the trail of dead” they draw us in with the quietly melodic guitar riff that introduces Mistakes And Regrets before its full on sonic assault of drums, guitar, bass and Conrad Keely’s yelling vocals smacks you straight between the ears. And from this point on it’s non-stop as Trail Of Dead drive through the whole album in song order. There are small moments of tranquillity - the gentle guitar half way through Totally Natural, the introduction to Perfect Teenhood and quieter moments in Claire De Lune but these almost act to tease you and they’re short lived before the incendiary noise of guitar, crashing cymbals, drums and deep heavy bass riffs brings you back to reality. Splitting vocal and drumming duties between Keely and Jason Reece always works well and tonight is no exception. It’s a superb 40+ minutes that seduces a number of the crowd into an almost trance as they let the songs drive them into a state of movement where nothing else matters. Trail Of Dead have a dedicated following but if you’d never seen them before it’d be impossible not to be transfixed by the sheer brilliance of the different soundscapes, the mix of gentleness and aggression and Reece screaming “I’m a mother fucking ghost” that make up Aged Dolls. It’s over too quickly but thankfully they return to deliver a fantastic encore that includes Another Morning Stoner, Homage and Will You Smile Again. Tonight it’s hard to imagine anyone left disappointed.
