With their 2018 debut ‘Pasar de la Luces’, released on Innovative Leisure Records, Mint Field made an album that couldn’t come from anywhere other than Mexico. It’s a unique combination of psych rock, dream-pop, shoegaze and krautrock, dreamt up and shaped by Amor Amezcua and Estrella del Sol Sánchez under the skies of Playas de Tijuana. Organic, spacious and inhabited, their music was driven by furious drums, dramatic basslines and distorted guitars. One year later, and the band has played more than 80 shows across Mexico, USA and Europe. They’ve played festivals such as Desert Daze, Pitchfork Music Festival Paris, Ceremonia, SXSW, toured with Ulrika Spacek and have opened for the likes of Courtney Barnett and Franz Ferdinand. Their music was also been chosen by Dior to illustrate its collaboration with the eight Mexican photographers who captured a collection inspired by escaramuzas, Mexican female riders who compete in the male-dominated rodeos.

Mint Field has since become a trio, with bass player Sebastian Neyra joining the band for the ‘Pasar de la Luces’ tour. Written on the road and recorded in a couple of days during a stop-off in Los Angeles, Mint Field’s new EP ‘Mientras Esperas’ is more dry, more distorted and more powerful. It captures the essence and the intensity of their live sound and energy. This EP is a reflection of the band’s feelings towards the modern world: the lack of care for nature and what surrounds us, our selfishness towards it and our thoughtlessness of what we are about to loose. It’s about questioning your role, carving your own path and acquiring peace of mind throughout it all.mind through all of this.

Lala Lala + Celestial Green + Frank. Brudenell Social Club, Leeds. 17.02.19.

Three bands for free. Can’t go wrong. Especially with a headliner like Lala Lala. I’d have been here even without the bargain entrance fee. What I hadn’t bargained for was the infectious noise pop of openers Frank. They’re new to me. Little wonder as they only formed in 2018 but despite it being early days for them they’ve already recorded and released five track EP ‘Valentine’. Singer Lily Fontaine has a voice that could front almost any band. Deep, soulful and full of passion it could easily lure you into thinking you might be about to watch a funky soul band, especially on ‘Self Love’. That is until you hear the dreamy, psychedelic synth of Ben Howell and then the sudden kick of fuzzy guitar from Fontaine that breaks in to songs such as ‘Napalm and Orange Juice’ and ‘The Carpet’. It’s hard to pin down just why Frank are so listenable. Perhaps it’s the subtle, almost gentle rhythm of the drums, bass and lead guitar. Perhaps it’s the sounds generated in the background by the synth or the quite hypnotic vocals. Maybe it’s that guitar noise that suddenly cuts into songs and then just as suddenly disappears. Whatever it is it’s a winning formula. Hopefully there’ll be a lot more to come from Frank.

I can’t write much about Celestial Green. They do nothing wrong, they have a decent number of fans (friends?) here tonight who clearly enjoy what they’re hearing and they do what they do very well. But what they do does little for me. Laid back, soft jangly guitar tunes. Background music that does little to penetrate your thoughts or distract you from other things. I’ll stop there.

Lillie West, singer and song writer behind Lala Lala wears her heart on her sleeve, turning herself inside out as she gives voice to locked in feelings dealing with loss, violence, insecurity and toxic relationships amongst other things. Opening with Water Over Sex – “You think I’m good well I’m soil in a sifter” – tonight’s set is dominated by songs from 2018 album The Lamb, a set list of 12 songs all underpinned with rousing guitar riffs interspersed with incredibly delicate moments. Copycat grapples with how everyone talks the same way on the internet, lies now forever true, it being almost impossible to be yourself. Destroyer deals head on with the struggles of staying sober, “If I’m using my hands can you cut them off. You’re a light turned on and I’m a moth”. I Get Cut is just over 2 minutes of glorious scuzzy indie guitar as West jumps from quietly stating “I get cut with every touch. You come by and soak it up” before almost yelling “But I bought a bat to keep me safe at home” referencing a home invasion she previously experienced. Siren 042, the recent single with WHY?’s Yoni Wolf makes a complete departure mid-set with it’s fragile, almost apologetic lyrics and equally delicate soundscape. West’s songs are straight talking, hard hitting and honest yet she delivers them with catchy, almost cheerful hooks over often melodic beats. It’s reverb filled, lo-fi indie pop. There’s no big, loud, rousing choruses. Lala Lala songs are far more subtle than that.  A hypnotic noise that simply sucks you into a different place. And despite the subjects covered, when not singing, West looks like she enjoys what she’s doing. Perhaps it’s cathartic, purging these feelings, taking control and focusing on moving forward, “What was lost and what was found. I don’t regret a single sound” (Spy).  2016’s Sleepyhead album gives us two of the evening’s many highlights – Fuck With Your Friends and Lala Song, one slow and hypnotic, one singalong, poppy with a perfect uplifting beat.

Deep, thought provoking and occasionally upbeat Lala Lala deserve to be playing bigger venues and to be heard by many more people. Superb.

And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead + Spoilers. Boilershop, Newcastle. 03.02.19.

Spoilers are a London based garage punk band whose first release, a 3 song cassette appropriately titled 3 Songs came out in 2015.  2015 also saw the release of a live album, again on cassette, before album Anti Vibe was released on vinyl in 2016. Limited 7” single Nothing appeared in 2017, also on cassette. This month saw the release of new single Facts Are Changing. Opening with Try Try Try, a thunderous, melodic noise underpinned by a relentless drum beat, rumbling bass and twin guitars it’s mere seconds before you’re hooked in. Energy, that’s what Spoilers have, tons of it. Craig Sharp’s vocals are hammered at you while Chris Smith pummels his bass. All this topped off with driving guitar licks. As a band they own the stage, losing themselves (as all great bands do) in the songs they deliver. No Pressure is relentless, perfect punk rock n roll while more recent songs Nothing and Facts Are Changing take the band in more commercially appealing direction without losing sight of where they’ve come from. With no loss of drive, speed, attitude or aggression these are songs to play in the build up to a really good night out. A real shame Spoilers only get 30 minutes tonight.

It’s 20 years since …Trail Of Dead’s album ‘Madonna’ was released and this current tour is celebrating that fact. Walking on to the dark chanting of “You will know them by the trail of dead” they draw us in with the quietly melodic guitar riff that introduces Mistakes And Regrets before its full on sonic assault of drums, guitar, bass and Conrad Keely’s yelling vocals smacks you straight between the ears. And from this point on it’s non-stop as Trail Of Dead drive through the whole album in song order. There are small moments of tranquillity - the gentle guitar half way through Totally Natural, the introduction to Perfect Teenhood and quieter moments in Claire De Lune but these almost act to tease you and they’re short lived before the incendiary noise of guitar, crashing cymbals, drums and deep heavy bass riffs brings you back to reality. Splitting vocal and drumming duties between Keely and Jason Reece always works well and tonight is no exception. It’s a superb 40+ minutes that seduces a number of the crowd into an almost trance as they let the songs drive them into a state of movement where nothing else matters. Trail Of Dead have a dedicated following but if you’d never seen them before it’d be impossible not to be transfixed by the sheer brilliance of the different soundscapes, the mix of gentleness and aggression and Reece screaming “I’m a mother fucking ghost” that make up Aged Dolls. It’s over too quickly but thankfully they return to deliver a fantastic encore that includes Another Morning Stoner, Homage and Will You Smile Again. Tonight it’s hard to imagine anyone left disappointed.
